Inland
Salento inland is a wide plain, spaced by little rocky hilles - Salento hilles – above all, in the most southern part (here their name is Serre).
That is to say a without mountains land, where, on the other hand, you can also find damp zones, as for example thermal baths and little rivers.
Moreover, the nature luxuriance expresses itself in the Mediterranean bushes, in the maritime pineries and in the fruits that this land gives to Salento area (marking it for a savoury and perfumed cooking). In this connection we can think about bushy capers, its olives (this area is characterised by the renowned oil), its sweet prickly pears and its main wine resource – in this connection, we can state that one of Salento merits is to have contained industrial impact, in peasant and traditional techniques favour.
Calcareous rock is one of its main resource (Salento is full of it, both in sea and in land), creating stones as for example: the "Pietra viva " and the Lecce stone (characterised by the Loam rock limestone).
Pietra Viva is used to pave the Salento villages characteristic streets and the Lecce stone is used for Sumptuous palaces and churches fronts (as happened in past) and also for opulent Lecce edifices (public and private).
This poor material added to clay and papier-mâché creates the craftsmanship base that is particular for its splendid and elegant realizations.
